President's Corner

Welcome to the 2014 fourth quarter!  I still can't believe it is that time of year again where the majority of  our clients are busy with budgeting, re-forecasting and reconciling.  This means holidays are just around the corner; and that involves friends, family, food, good cheer, and lots of celebrations!

Reflection Corner
Most of our clients are friends, and we like that!  Tom Giannini is no exception.  He was recently hired by Cushman & Wakefield as a Senior Construction Manager.  After several weeks of coordination, Tom and I finally met for a "catch up lunch".  Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, I was stopped in my tracks when Tom said "It sure is nice sitting here with you, having a nice lunch, enjoying the conversation and talking about business, life and family".  I was moving on to the next topic in my head but paused, and then said "What do you mean?" He went on to explain, "Well, a year ago, I was in Afghanistan, in full body armor, hoping that I'd be home with all of my limbs and mental faculties in place and to be able to see my family again."  I was shocked and realized that I had not taken time to "stop and smell the roses".  I was too busy being wrapped up in "life" yet sitting across the table from me was Tom, grateful to be alive, grateful to be in Fremont, grateful to have a job, and grateful to be dining with me.

What We're Reading Now

As you know, DCI President/CEO, David Doyle does a LOT of reading. A topic at the forefront of the media throughout the past few years, is the increasing amount of women in the business sector. A great article that explains this fairly recent topic is "Best Cities for Businesswomen" from the Business Times

book 2
With the close proximity of Silicon Valley, it seems an obvious choice that the number one city for businesswomen is likely within the Silicon Valley. The first city that came to my mind was San Francisco. Surprisingly though, one city trumps the Bay Area: Washington D.C. is the best city for businesswomen. The number two city however, is San Francisco-Oakland area. The highest scores were rewarded to cities where a large number of well-educated, well-payed women hold positions of power and influence in their community. These women generally shared four qualities: A commitment to education, higher pay, managerial experience, and an entrepreneurial drive.

The top ten cities are Washington D.C., San Francisco-Oakland, San Jose, Baltimore, Denver, New York, Boston, Minneapolis-St.Paul, Madison, and Raleigh.

Here's an overall look at the numbers of the top two cities: in Washington D.C., nearly 46% of women have a bachelor's degree, 21% have more advanced degrees and the average annual salary is $39,824. Also, one out of every nine female employees holds a management position. On the other hand, San Francisco-Oakland women make around $36,377. To see the rest of the results and where other cities rank, click on the link below.

If you don't already subscribe, the Business Times is an excellent publication to be aware of real estate/construction and "general happenings" in our area.

Hi-Tech T.I.

We recently completed a fun "techie" t.i. in San Jose.  Even though the building department required a WEEK'S notice for building inspection(s), we pulled it off.  Take a look.

In Closing

I don't want to dampen the mood, but I have a couple of events to share with you.

1. Six weeks ago, I went to the doctor with the same exact symptoms I suffered from in 2010 (for those who remember, that's the year my body began breaking down - very scary time).  After several tests, I received the news of ".....yup..........it's your appendix.............we'll operate later today...".  Surgery was scheduled for 5:00 pm at Kaiser in Redwood City.   The "reality check" was that I was home (Pleasanton) in bed by 8:30 pm the same day!  Incredible!  Now, I'm feeling great and doing much better!

2.  The passing of a dear friend.  I'm sorry to report that Pat McCarthy, owner of Liberty Lighting in Santa Clara, passed away last week.  He lost his battle with cancer, after fighting it for several months.  Pat was a terrific man and is survived by his wife and four young children.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
